Piece by Piece 5K Recap

We are exhausted!

We want a nap. That’s it.

Putting on a 5k is a ridiculous amount of work and I just developed an insane appreciation for what everyone does across the country organizing races. You all rock. Our Piece by Piece 5k was held this morning and we couldn’t be happier with how things turned out.

The family friendly Piece by Piece 5K Walk/Run benefited Team Up! with Autism Speaks, an organization dedicated to funding global biomedical research into the causes, prevention, treatments, and cure for autism; to raise public awareness about autism and its effects on individuals, families, and society; and to bring hope to all who deal with the hardships of this disorder. It is Autism Speaks firm belief that, working together, we will find the missing pieces of the puzzle. We are committed to raising the funds necessary to support these goals. The cause is bigger than the obstacles…but Piece by Piece we will succeed.

We had a total of 132 registered participants across both walking and running divisions; although most that came out today were walkers because this was a family friendly event and we strongly encouraged those with autistic children to come and participate. The weather was absolutely perfect in the high 70’s and low 80’s but it felt much warmer with the sun and humidity. Due to the temperature we opted to pass out bottles of water half way rather than cups, and when racers finished there was more water, gatorade, bananas, oranges, bagels and granola bars waiting for them.

Overall, we were short on the volunteers. Registration took a little longer than we had hoped, but we were grateful to have a compassionate crowd willing to wait. We were lucky to have music provided by a DJ to help entertain everyone while they waited. The race only started a few minutes later than we planned. We started the walkers first to give them a chance to get ahead and thinned out; runners followed about 10-15 minutes later. Our first male runner to cross the finish line was one of our final registrations. Our first female came out of the 10-14 age group.

Medals were awarded to all who pre-registered and those who were fast enough earned age group awards as well. In total two trophies and 155 medals were awarded along with two dozen raffle prizes. Prizes included a Dash running watch from Soleus running, a 4 pack of Nuun hydration tabs, and a membership to Motigo along with gift certificates to local businesses and of course the 50/50. The winner of the 50/50 was so nice, she donated it right back to the charity. In total, we raised $1,580. A corporate sponsor has been kind enough to offer to DOUBLE a donation up to $250, which when completed, will bring our total for the event to $2,080 to donate to Team Up! with Autism Speaks.

We would like to take one more opportunity to thank all of our wonderful sponsors. Without your help today’s event would not have been possible. We are hoping to have the event return next year and are already thinking of ways that we can improve!
