On June 3rd, we held our 3rd Annual Piece by Piece 5K which benefited Autism Speaks through their Team Up program. Jen and I will again be representing Autism Speaks in October when we participate in the 2017 Chicago Marathon.
Now in our third year, we had goals this year of surpassing 150 participants and raising at least $2,500. We also wanted to make improvements to our race and provide the best medals and awards that would rival any 5K race, anywhere.
One of the biggest improvements we made was the addition of race timing thanks to a generous donation from The Maple Run. With the addition of WebScorer timing, we were able to calculate finish times and post those results online which many runners told us they loved. We also, for the first time, had custom medals created for our event. Our medals were designed by Running Awards and Apparel and our awards for our top finishers were designed by Adirondack Awards and Apparel.
We had excellent early registration numbers and were hopeful we would surpass 150 runners. On race day, the weather gods cooperated giving us a perfect morning during a 4 week period where we’ve seen little sunshine in upstate New York. On race morning, we had a total of 148 runners sign up, but the day after the race, we had a couple message us asking if they could still sign up to do the race virtually, so we hit 150 participants!!!
We ended up raising $2,516 from the event and donations related to the event, surpassing our goal by a mere $16. When combined with other fundraising efforts from early in the spring, we donated just over $3,600 to Team Up! with Autism Speaks.
An event like this is not easy to plan and requires help from a lot of people to pull off. The list is to long to name but we are grateful to each and every individual who donated time, effort, money, supplies, products, or any combination thereof. We’ve had many people message us and say how much fun they had and expressed hope we would come back again next year.
We would like to say Thank-You to all of our runners and volunteers for coming out and supporting our race. It is Autism Speaks firm belief that, working together, we will find the missing pieces of the puzzle. We are committed to raising the funds necessary to support these goals. The cause is bigger than the obstacles…but Piece by Piece we will succeed.
